Atypical Voyage — Privacy Policy

Atypical Voyage (“the app,” “we”) is published by Atypical Vagabond (“us”), based in Portugal. We keep this policy short because the app collects very little, and specific because vagueness in a privacy policy is usually hiding something.
You can use the entire app — search, refusals, all 122 destination dossiers, saved places, routes — without giving us your email or your location.
What we collect
- Email addresses, only when you offer one. There are three places you may choose to give us an email: unlocking the rest of a destination dossier, joining the waitlist for a place we don’t yet chart, and submitting a correction. We store the address, the context (which dossier, which search query, or which correction), and a timestamp. We use it to send occasional dispatches about the project, to notify you if we chart a place you asked about, and to reply if we have a question about a correction. We do not sell or rent email addresses.
- Anonymous usage events. The app records interactions like which places you searched, which weirdness-dial setting you used, which results you tapped, and whether you saved a voyage. These events are attached to a random device identifier generated on first launch (for example
av_k3n8dj2p_m9x2). It is not derived from your device, your advertising ID, or anything about you, and it is not linked to your email unless you separately give us one. Deleting the app deletes the identifier; reinstalling creates a new one. - Corrections you submit. If you tell us a dossier is wrong, we store what you wrote, which destination and which section it concerns, which version of the text you were reading, and the app version. This is how the content gets more accurate over time.
- Beacon check-ins (optional feature). If you choose to use Beacon, each time you tap “Drop a beacon” the app reads your location once and sends it to our server along with any note you typed. The coordinates are precise, not approximate. Beacons are visible only to people who have your voyage’s share link — share it only with people you trust. Location is read only in the moment you tap the button — never in the background, never automatically. You can end a voyage (the page stays visible, marked ended) or revoke it (the link dies and all location history for that voyage is deleted from our server immediately). Voyages expire automatically after 60 days.
- Membership codes. If membership is introduced and you redeem a code, we store the code, its tier, and when it was redeemed. Purchases are handled on our website by a payment processor — we never see or store your card details.
Beacon is not a safety or emergency service. It does not contact emergency services and must not be relied on as a substitute for telling someone your plans.
What stays on your phone and never reaches us
- Saved destinations and which collection each one is in
- Chained routes you build
- Whether you have unlocked dossiers or dismissed prompts
- Any membership code stored on the device
- Beacon check-ins queued while you were offline, until they send
These live in the app’s local storage and are removed when you delete the app.
What we do NOT collect
- Your real name
- Your address or phone number
- Your device advertising identifier (IDFA)
- Any information from your camera, microphone, contacts, or calendar
- Any information about other apps on your device
- Continuous or background location — location is read only at the moment you explicitly drop a Beacon check-in, and at no other time
Where the data goes
- Email entries, corrections, usage events and beacon check-ins are transmitted to our own server and database, hosted on Cloudflare (Workers and D1). Data may be processed in facilities outside your country. We do not use third-party analytics or form-processing services for this data.
- IP addresses are hashed (SHA-256, salted) before storage — we retain no raw IPs.
- Apple distributes the app and provides crash reports, and aggregate analytics if you have opted into sharing those in your iOS settings. This is governed by Apple’s privacy policy.
- If over-the-air updates are enabled, your device contacts Expo’s update service to check whether newer app code is available. That request includes technical details such as app and runtime version.
- Anonymous usage events are pruned after 6 months. Email entries are kept until you request deletion. Corrections are kept as long as they remain useful for maintaining the content.
- We do not sell, rent, or transfer any of this data to third parties, and we do not run advertising.
Your rights
- Access, correction, deletion. Email us and we will retrieve, correct, or delete any record associated with your address within 30 days. Because the app has no accounts, include the email address you used, and — for beacon data — the beacon link. If you have given us neither, we may hold nothing that can be connected to you, which is by design.
- Opting out of analytics. Deleting and reinstalling the app resets the anonymous device identifier. An in-app opt-out toggle is planned.
- GDPR / UK GDPR. We are established in Portugal, so the GDPR applies to us regardless of where you are. Our legal basis for processing email entries, corrections and beacon data is your explicit consent, given when you submit them; our basis for anonymous usage events is legitimate interest in improving the product. You may withdraw consent at any time. You also have the right to complain to your data protection authority — in Portugal, the CNPD.
- CCPA. If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we hold and to request its deletion.
Children
Atypical Voyage is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe we have, please contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page with any material changes and note the date at the top. Continued use of the app after a change means you accept the updated policy.

We do not use the Advertising Identifier and do not track users across apps or websites owned by other companies, so App Tracking Transparency does not apply and no ATT prompt is shown.
