Camino Francés · Day 18La Rioja

Nájera to CirueñaA quieter stop before Santo Domingo

Day 18 carried us out of Nájera across open Rioja country to Cirueña, where we stopped for the night instead of pushing on to Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

This is where the itinerary needed correcting.

We did not sleep in Santo Domingo on Day 18. We stopped earlier, in Cirueña.

The landscape was opening up as Rioja’s vineyard country began giving way to broader agricultural ground.

Sometimes the most accurate Camino story is simply: this is where we actually stopped.

Leaving Nájera

The route left the red cliffs and river behind and moved into more open country.

By this point the Camino rhythm was familiar enough that not every day needed a giant monument or dramatic story to matter.

This was a day of moving west and letting the landscape change around us.

Stopping Before Santo Domingo

Instead of continuing all the way to Santo Domingo de la Calzada, we stopped in Cirueña.

That matters for the journal because the overnight stop changes how the next day should be told: Santo Domingo became a major stop on the road to Grañón rather than our Day 18 destination.

Albergue Virgen de Guadalupe

Firsthand stay: We stayed at Albergue de Peregrinos Virgen de Guadalupe in Cirueña. Price and bed details can be added later if recovered.

Next: Cirueña to Grañón

The next stage takes us through Santo Domingo de la Calzada — cathedral, rooster legend and all — before continuing to Grañón.

Atypical Last Thoughts

Not every meaningful Camino decision is dramatic.

Sometimes it is simply stopping where you stopped, sleeping where you slept, and telling the story accurately afterward.

Buen Camino.
