Portugal is OPEN for US Tourism
Portugal is the most recent European country to open its borders to U.S. travelers. This is the destination many Americans have been waiting. You have landed your vaccine and have long awaited the news of Portugal opening up to American tourists.
While here, you can also explore the major cities with Bolt’s e-bikes. It is a fantastic and safe way to get around and see historic sites. However, if you want to see the longest pedestrian bridge in Europe, you will need a car.

Portugal is OPEN for US Tourism
Today, June 15th, 2021, Portugal announced tourists from the U.S. could enter the country. The only requirement was that American tourists provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test.
Travelers over the age of 2 years must take the COVID-19 test. These tests must be a nucleic acid amplification test (a PCR test). The PCR test must be within the last 72 hours before boarding or a rapid antigen test within 24 hours of boarding. So, with Portugal being OPEN for US Tourism, you might wonder what the restrictions are.
With all these details, you might also wonder if you need to learn Portuguese. In the rural areas, few people speak English. In the major cities, it is better to have some basic phrases like obrigado (thank you) or de nada (no problem).
Restrictions
Various COVID-19 restrictions are still in place across Portugal. Masks are required at beaches while entering and moving around. A distance of 1.5 meters (approximately 5 feet) must always be kept. This includes between their towels while lounging.
Social distance measures and masks are also enforced in closed public spaces, mandatory when social distancing is impossible.
Why Travel to Portugal?
Even with the social distancing requirements, there hasn’t been a better time to travel to Portugal. Whether it is to visit the castles or the UNESCO World Heritage sites found in Douro Valley, Portugal has a significant amount to offer in 2021. However, Portugal is OPEN for US Tourism.
