Coimbra is nearly halfway between Lisbon and Porto, although narrowly closer to Porto. While Lisbon and Porto oversee the Atlantic Ocean, Coimbra is inland and built along the Rio Mondego and up into the hills.

If you plan a road trip to Portugal, you will drive a minimum of 80 minutes from Porto to Coimbra. In contrast, the drive from Lisbon
takes slightly more than 2 hours. You can arrive
by train from Porto and Lisbon. The journey by intercity or Alfa Pendular train takes almost the same time as driving.

Are you interested in Lisbon and Porto? It would help if you considered reading the linked articles before coming to Coimbra. I have written plenty of articles on the cities that will help you get to Coimbra.

If you are interested in Portuguese history, consider traveling here. Coimbra University is one of the oldest Universities in the world. Nearby the University, you will find Se Velha, the old monastery. There is an ancient Roman aqueduct nearby the botanical gardens too.

Do not forget to go to the Machado de Castro National Museum and Joanine Library while you are here.

Outside of visiting historical markers, there are plenty of things to do as this is a university town. There is music, food, and so much more.

However, if you are still wondering, what are the best things to do in Coimbra? Not sure if it’s worth visiting as a day trip from Porto or Lisbon? Read these blogs and discover why you should spend at least one day. And even more.
