Early Morning in Porto
The day began in the charming city of Porto, known for its colorful streets, picturesque riverfront, and world-famous Port wine. The morning sun bathed the city in a warm glow as I made my way to the starting point of the Camino. Porto’s iconic Ribeira district served as a fitting backdrop to the beginning of this journey.
The Camino’s Inaugural Step
With my backpack securely fastened, I took that inaugural step on the Camino. It’s a step that carries the weight of countless pilgrims who have walked this path. Each ‘peregrino’ has their own stories and aspirations.
The Riverside Stroll
The Camino Portuguese begins with a leisurely riverside stroll along the Douro River. The view of Porto’s colorful buildings and historic bridges was a visual delight. As I walked, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the intricate beauty of the city and the promise of the journey ahead.
Ponte de Dom Luís I: A Bridge to Begin With
The iconic Dom Luís I Bridge marked where I left Porto behind. I walked along the Douro River across from Vila Nova de Gaia. With its stunning ironwork, the bridge served as a symbolic gateway, signaling the start of a new chapter.
The Seaside Route
Leaving the urban landscape behind, I soon found myself on the open road, with the vast Atlantic Ocean on one side and rolling hills on the other. The salty breeze and waves crashing against the shore created a sense of serenity and connection with nature.
Local Encounters
As I walked, I had the opportunity to meet fellow pilgrims and locals who were friendly. They were welcoming and eager to share stories. These encounters added depth to the journey and reinforced that the Camino is not just about the destination. It’s about the people you meet along the way.
Labruge: The Day’s End
The first day of the Camino Portuguese came to a close in the picturesque coastal village of Labruge. The tranquil beaches and the quaint streets provided a serene backdrop for reflection. As I settled into my accommodation, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for the day’s experiences.
