The Ultimate Travel Gear List: Your Gateway to Exploration

Embark on an unforgettable adventure with meticulously curated gear for the seasoned explorer. Curating a travel gear list is critical to ensure you have all the right gear. This comprehensive guide explores the essential equipment I utilize to navigate the globe, from bustling cityscapes to untamed wilderness.

Finding Your Perfect Travel Backpack vs. Suitcase

The age-old question: backpack or suitcase? The answer hinges on your travel style. Backpacks reign supreme for navigating Central America’s vibrant chicken buses or hitchhiking across Africa. Conversely, suitcases or rolling duffels might be more suitable for frequent flyers or city dwellers. My odyssey began with a backpack, but my preferences have evolved. With a growing family and an ever-expanding photography arsenal, suitcases now offer a more convenient solution.

Travel Gear List

The eternal question: travel backpack, suitcase, or rolling duffel? The answer depends on personal preference and your travel style. Developing a travel gear list will help you decide which type of baggage you should utilize. A rolling duffel or suitcase might be more suitable for those who spend a lot of time in cities or frequently fly. I started vagabonding around the world with a backpack, but my travel style has evolved. Nowadays, I find a suitcase more convenient, especially with my increasing photography gear and traveling with kids.

My Main Travel Bags

I travel with up to three bags: a rolling suitcase as my main bag, a backpack for hiking or trekking trips, and an airplane carry-on camera daypack. Typically, I only need to check one bag—the hard shell suitcase—with the hiking backpack flat inside. I check both bags for more extensive trips requiring more technical gear, like trekking or winter camping.

  • Victorinox Suitcase: My favorite lightweight travel suitcase features ample space, a robust locking zipper, and a tough outer shell. The quiet 360-degree wheels endure plenty of airport abuse.
  • Hiking Travel Backpack: This lightweight, comfortable backpack includes full front-zipper access to all my gear and can lie flat in my suitcase if necessary.
  • Camera Daypack: This amazing carry-on camera and laptop backpack is ideal for day hikes. It has room for snacks, water, a jacket, a full-size tripod, and more.

I check the suitcase and a backpack for expeditions demanding technical gear, like winter camping or severe trekking.

Gearing Up for Photographic Adventures

For photography enthusiasts, here’s a peek into the camera equipment that fuels my travel photography endeavors.

Travel with Confidence: Checked Bags vs. Carry-On

I have embraced the carry-on-only approach for short trips. However, our evolving photography needs and growing family have necessitated checking a bag. Here’s a comforting fact: after a decade of frequent travel, airlines have never misplaced my checked luggage. In all but one instance, the bag reappeared within 24 hours, causing minimal disruption. Losing a bag for a day is not the travel apocalypse some portray. While one lost bag for a week was undeniably frustrating, considering the frequency of my travels, it remains a rare occurrence.

One thing that helps me is a travel gear checklist. Here is what I utilize on my travels, and I provide it for free.
