Arica and Parinacota Region

The Arica y Parinacota Region is the northernmost region in Chile. Chile occupied this region after the Treaty on Ancon. Peru to the north and Bolivia situated to the east. If you want to immigrate to Chile, consider these realities about living abroad.

Arica is the capital and largest city. It has a population of approximately 224,000 people.

Chilean Culture

Two unique cultural aspects of this region involve the Amara people and Afro-Chileans. The Aymara are indigenous people from the Andes. They became subjects of the Incan empire in the 15th century. The Afro-Chileans are descendants of slaves from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Amara people celebrate Willkakuti on June 21st each year. In the southern hemisphere, this day marks the winter solstice. This celebration is the beginning of the new agricultural year for the Amara.

Lumbanga and Oro Negro (Spanish for “Black gold”) are Afro-Chilean NGOs. They work to advance the rights of Chilean Afro descendants. While Afro-Chileans have gained rights through these organizations, they remain visible through rallies. These rallies are more situated in Santiago but occasionally are found in Arica.

Climate

A desert climate dominates this region. Temperatures can fluctuate highly between daytime and nighttime, which is typical of desert climates.

Things to do and see

El Morro

Suppose you search for photos of Arica or arrive blind in the city center. In that case, you will become familiar with El Morro, the massive cliff of compressed sand and rock that guards the city’s southern tip. This location was a strategic military point in the battle for Arica. There were significant battles between the Bolivians, Peruvians, and Chileans.

El Morros’ cherry on top is an enormous Chilean flag blowing in the constant ocean breeze.

La Cuevas de Anzota

There are no gates, guards, or entry costs. A few plaques explain some of the animal life you will find.

The Cuevas de Anzota is the most alluring attraction in Arica. As you enter the 12-kilometer road, it slowly tapers down to a walking path. You will then be led to a stone’s throw away from the ocean through the caves’ entrances. Stairs were chiseled out of the rock, allowing accessibility to the caves and beaches.

It is recommended to rent some bikes in Arica. Enjoy the scenery and take your time. If your time budget doesn’t allow you for a full-day bike trip, then you can drive down here. I highly suggest not taking an Uber/Lyft, as cell reception is spotty.

Arica Beaches

Suppose you have spent some time in Bolivia or Peru. In that case, chances are you are looking forward to, as previously mentioned, Chile’s extensive and gleaming coast. Arica beaches provide many locations to cool off.

Enjoy Playa Chinchorro if you want open space within proximity closest to ‘El Centro.’

If you want to travel slightly away from the city, check out La Lisera.

Are you interested in a journey? Then it would be best if you considered La Liserilla. Here, you will find the Cuevas de Anzota and take the path to a secluded cove beach.

Beach activities

With a constant breeze around Arica, it’s only the hot, humid summer days that you will be dying to jump into the ocean. Despite the season when you visit, you will want to get into the Pacific Ocean.

With various waves for varying degrees of expertise, you can bodyboard and surf the waves on these beaches. The beach breaks to take your first delve into ‘hanging ten’ on a surfboard can be done here.

Lauca National Park

Lauca National Park borders Bolivia. Therefore, this national park has a massive expanse of land dotted with snow-capped volcanoes, two gorgeous high-altitude lakes, Chingara and Cotacotani, and the K’isi K’isini mountain. Lauca National Park will have you dragging your jaw on the ground.

The ascent begins in Arica, Chile. Across the border in Bolivia is the summit.

Tour agencies located in Africa can take you on a trek to Putre. Putre is just outside of the park. You can travel out here for the day if you have a rental car.

The region south of Arica Parinacota is Tarapaca and the next area we will discuss.
