Rest Day in BurgosThe pause before the plains

Day 24 was less about repairing my body and more about deciding how I wanted to meet the Meseta — honestly, slowly, and on my own terms.

Burgos was a threshold.

Behind me were the Pyrenees, Navarra, Rioja, the forests, and three and a half weeks of walking.

Ahead lay the Meseta — the long, high, famously mental middle of the Camino.

After walking into Burgos from Atapuerca on Day 23, Sage and I had the chance to stay put for a change. This rest day had a different purpose from our Pamplona rest day. It was about deciding what came next.

The honest answer was simple: I am saving the Meseta for another walk.

A Camino Rest Day in Burgos

01 · Recover

Give your feet a break

Laundry, feet up and tending to small aches were part of our day. Rest is still part of a long walk.

02 · Explore

See Burgos slowly

The cathedral, river and plazas made it easy to explore without turning the rest day into another stage.

03 · Reconsider

Make room for the Meseta

We chose not to rush through the plains simply to say we had walked them. That stretch deserved a separate return.

For anyone planning their own Camino, a rest day can be time for recovery, laundry and checking the next stage. Our Camino Francés itinerary can help you build in days like this.

Why I’m Saving the Meseta

I am not walking the Meseta on this trip.

That decision sits awkwardly beside the pilgrim idea that every step must be walked in one continuous line.

But my whole travel philosophy is to refuse the script when the script stops serving the experience.

The Meseta deserves more than being rushed through half-present. I want to come back and walk it on its own terms.

Being Still in a Beautiful City

I spent the day slowly.

Another look at the cathedral. Time by the river. Laundry. Feet up. Small damage tended.

Three weeks earlier a rest day made me twitchy. Now sitting in a plaza for two hours felt like a full and worthy use of a life.

Stillness had become a skill instead of a failure.

Our Burgos Accommodation

Where we stayed in Burgos: Burgos Rooms Catedral, booked through Booking.com. We paid €183.99 total for 2 nights. We stayed here for the walking-stage arrival and this rest day. Room type can be added later if needed.

Planning a Rest Day in Burgos

Is Burgos a good rest stop on the Camino Francés?

Yes. It offers a chance to take care of laundry and recovery while enjoying its historic center, riverside walks and the UNESCO-listed Burgos Cathedral. You can have an interesting day without making it another long-distance walking stage.

How many Camino kilometers did we walk on Day 24?

Zero official Camino stage kilometers. We still wandered around Burgos, but this was a rest day rather than a walk to the next town.

Where did we stay in Burgos, and what did it cost?

We stayed at Burgos Rooms Catedral for two nights, covering our Day 23 arrival and Day 24 rest day. Our recorded Booking.com total was €183.99 for both nights, not per night.

Why did we save the Meseta for later?

We wanted to walk that section properly rather than rush across it for the sake of completing a continuous line. The Meseta remains part of a future walk, and this Camino journal will resume in León.
➜ The Journey Continues

Next: The Camino Continues in León

Days 25–31 are being saved for a future Meseta walk. Our Camino story continues in León on Day 32; that article is not yet published. Until then, explore the Camino Francés itinerary.

Atypical Last Thoughts

A still day in Burgos, a threshold honestly named, and the great plains left waiting for the trip they deserve.

Some roads you walk now. Some you promise to come back for.

Buen Camino.
