Viana to Logroño: Crossing Into La Rioja
Day 14 was short on kilometers but big on milestones.
We left Viana in Navarra. A few hours later, we walked into an entirely new region.
One foot in Navarra.
One foot in La Rioja.
Keep moving west.
After thirteen days of walking, crossing another regional boundary felt strangely significant.
There was no airplane.
No train.
No car.
We simply walked across it.
Yesterday, we walked from Los Arcos to Viana , ending the day at Albergue Izar.
Today the Camino would take us out of Navarra, across the Ebro, and into Logroño.

Leaving Viana
After the longer rolling walk into Viana the day before, Day 14 felt almost suspiciously manageable.
Ten kilometers?
At this point, that barely sounded like a full day.
Sage had struggled the previous afternoon, so I was not complaining.
A shorter stage meant less time grinding forward and more time giving our bodies a chance to recover.
We left Viana and headed west again.
The buildings slowly disappeared.
The open landscape returned.
Somewhere ahead was an invisible line separating Navarra from La Rioja.
Crossing Into La Rioja
There is something satisfying about crossing borders on foot.
Normally, regions appear and disappear through a windshield.
A road sign flashes past.
Maybe the GPS says something.
Then it is gone.
Walking makes boundaries different.
You earned every kilometer leading up to that line.
Behind us was Navarra.
Ahead was La Rioja.
No plane.
No train.
No car.
We walked here.
Approaching Logroño
The approach to Logroño gradually changes the feeling of the Camino.
Open countryside starts becoming urban.
More roads.
More buildings.
More evidence that the quiet trail is about to dump you into a real city.
After days of villages and smaller towns, that can feel slightly overwhelming.
It can also feel fantastic.
The Puente de Piedra Into Logroño
The Camino enters historic Logroño across the Ebro River on the Puente de Piedra.
This is one of those arrivals that feels appropriately Camino.
You do not sneak into town through a shopping center.
You cross a major river on a historic bridge and walk straight toward the old city.
After two weeks of walking, crossing a bridge into a new region can feel like arriving somewhere much farther away than ten kilometers.
Arriving in Logroño
Logroño felt alive.
Very alive.
When we arrived, the city was hosting a medieval-style fair.
After days of listening to shoes hit dirt, suddenly there were crowds, costumes, food, noise, and activity everywhere.
It was almost sensory overload.
I liked it.
One of the things I love about the Camino Francés is that it refuses to be only one kind of journey.
One day: quiet wheat fields.
Another: a medieval fair in the capital of La Rioja.
Then tomorrow: walking again.
Calle Laurel and Pintxos
Logroño is famous for wine.
I was much more interested in what was sitting on the small plates.
Calle Laurel is one of the city’s best-known food streets, packed with places serving pintxos.
I skipped the wine and concentrated on the food.
That worked just fine.
After days of burning thousands of calories on foot, a street dedicated to small plates starts looking less like tourism and more like infrastructure.
Camino priorities:
Bed.
Food.
Feet.
Then culture.

But distance is a terrible way to measure some stages.
We woke up in Navarra.
We went to sleep in La Rioja.
In between, we crossed another boundary, walked over the Ebro, entered a real city, wandered through a medieval fair, and ate pintxos.
Not bad for six miles.
The Camino keeps doing this.
A day looks small on the map.
Then you live it.
Suddenly there is an entire story inside those few centimeters of trail.
Navarra behind us.
La Rioja ahead.
