What I Pack for My Travels: Your Guide to Packing

Hey adventurers — it’s Carter, your Atypical Vagabond.

Since I hit the road in 2006, what I pack has evolved a lot. Back then, I traveled with giant duffels and 60L packs. Now? Everything I need fits in a single backpack.

Why? Because overpacking is a trap. I used to lug around way too much “just in case” gear. But the more I travel, the more I realize I don’t need much to thrive.

Before any trip, I make a list, then cut it in half. If I won’t use it often, it stays home. If I desperately need something? I buy it on the road. Medicine, clothes, umbrellas—you’ll find them anywhere. I also plan trips around similar climates so I’m not dragging sweaters through tropical humidity.

I carry enough clothes for 7–10 days, then do laundry. Easy. Light. Efficient.

Below is my current packing list—tweaked and tested across continents. It’s geared toward warm climates, and of course, you should tailor it to your own travel style.

Gear

  • Camera (optional, but I like the quality bump)

👕 Clothes

  • 5 t-shirts
  • 1 long sleeve
  • 1 pair of jeans (or khakis if I want to dry them faster)
  • 1 pair of shorts
  • 7 pairs of underwear
  • 8 pairs of socks (I always lose socks)
  • 1 bathing suit
  • Sneakers + flip-flops
  • 1 dress shirt & dress shoes (for nights out)

PS: I swear by Unbound Merino. Durable, stylish, and stink-proof.

🧼 Toiletries

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss
  • Razor, deodorant
  • Travel-size shampoo & shower gel
  • Micro towel (never travel without one)

🩹 Medical Kit

  • Band-aids, hydrocortisone, antibiotic cream
  • Eye drops, Tylenol, hand sanitizer

🔧 Miscellaneous

🎒 Pro Tip: Use a small backpack. You’ll be forced to pack smart. Big bags tempt you to fill every inch—and regret it later.

Pack less. Wander further. And remember—if it doesn’t fit in your pack, it probably doesn’t belong in your adventure.

This setup covers me wherever I roam. You might think, “But what about [insert random item]?” And hey, that’s fair. Everyone travels differently. But for my hostel-hopping, summer-chasing lifestyle, this list works.

And the truth is, you don’t need much to travel well. The lighter your load, the freer you feel.
