Rest Day in Logroño Two Weeks In, Reading the Receipts
Day 15 had no stage to finish. That was the point. Two weeks into the Camino Francés, I stopped long enough to wash the clothes, inspect the feet, eat properly, and notice that the person sitting in Logroño was not quite the same person who started in St-Jean.
By Day 15, I had finally made peace with a truth the Camino had been trying to beat into me: rest is not a break from the strategy. Rest is the strategy.
This was my second rest day on the Camino Francés.
No guilt this time.
You do not get to Santiago by walking every single day until something snaps.
You get there by walking, then stopping before something snaps, then walking again.
Walk.
Recover.
Walk again.
That is still the Camino.
The day before, Sage and I walked from Viana to Logroño , crossing out of Navarra, over the Ebro, and into La Rioja.
Today, the Camino could wait.

Why Take a Rest Day on the Camino Francés?
Long-distance walking can make stubbornness look suspiciously like discipline.
They are not the same thing.
Pushing through every ache does not make you a better pilgrim.
Sometimes it just makes you an injured pilgrim farther from home.
By Logroño, I had stopped treating rest as something I needed to earn.
The smart move is not walking until your body forces you to stop. It is stopping while the choice is still yours.
What Two Weeks Does to a Person
A rest day is a good time to take stock.
Logroño gave me the chair to do it from.
Two weeks earlier, I was standing in St-Jean staring toward the Pyrenees as a soft, anxious, over-packed mess with no real idea what I had signed up for.
Now I was leaner. Browner. Calmer.
My feet had developed opinions and calluses in roughly equal measure.
The pack that nearly broke me on Day 1 now felt like part of my own body.
The Change Is Boring Until It Isn’t
Nobody can really sell you this part in a brochure.
The Camino does not necessarily change you with one giant revelation on a mountaintop.
It works by repetition.
Kilometer by kilometer.
Same pack.
Same shoes.
Same basic question: keep going?
The Camino does not always change you
with revelations.
Sometimes it changes you with repetition.
What I Actually Did on My Logroño Rest Day
Rest days are philosophical right up until you smell the socks.
Then they become logistics.
Back to Calle Laurel
We went back to Calle Laurel.
It would have been a crime not to.
Logroño is famous for Rioja wine.
I do not drink, so my recovery plan had a different centerpiece.
Pintxos.
Lots of them.
Sage and I ate slowly, wandered without the packs, and watched Logroño do its ordinary, beautiful evening thing.
A Gentle Day in Logroño
We did not need a checklist.
We needed a city we could wander through without carrying the pack.
That was the luxury.
Stop when something looked interesting.
Sit when we wanted.
Walk into a church because the door was open, not because the guidebook said we were running late.
Another Church, Another Chance to Slow Down
The Camino gives you a lot of churches.
On walking days, sometimes you see them with one eye on the clock.
A rest day changes that.
There was time to look up.
Time to notice the painted dome, the stone, the artwork, and the scale of the place.
No urgency.
That might have been the real luxury of Day 15.
Where We Stayed in Logroño: Hotel Condes de Haro
Sage and I stayed at Hotel Condes de Haro for two nights.
The total for the two-night booking was €156.30.
Day 15 was the second night, which meant something luxurious by Camino standards: we did not have to repack everything and carry it somewhere else.
The room could simply remain a room.
Our bags could stay put.
So could we.
Looking West Again
I also did the boring-but-vital rest-day work.
I looked ahead.
More Rioja vineyards first.
Then the road continuing toward Burgos.
For now, knowing what was ahead was its own kind of rest.
You cannot brace for what you refuse to look at.
Two weeks.
Lighter.
Harder.
Calmer.
Tomorrow, west again.

Keep Building Your Camino
The journal tells you what happened to us. These guides can help you build a Camino that works for you.
Atypical Last Thoughts
Zero kilometers.
Full belly.
Clean clothes.
Feet aired out and allowed to reconsider some of their recent life choices.
More importantly, I had enough stillness to notice what two weeks had already done to me.
The man who started in St-Jean had been worried about whether he could do this.
The man sitting in Logroño was starting to trust that he could.
Not because of one dramatic victory.
Repetition.
Wake up.
Walk.
Eat.
Sleep.
Repeat.
Then, every once in a while, stop long enough to realize it is working.
Two weeks in.
A body that finally trusts itself.
West again tomorrow.
Buen Camino.
