I used to think “home” was a dirty word.
Adventure was out there — on the road. That’s where life felt alive, buzzing with possibility: wild stories, new friends, strange food, and the thrill of never knowing what tomorrow might bring. Home? That was routines, bills, and meetings that could have been emails. No thanks.
My first trip overseas — a vacation to Costa Rica — lit that fire in me. Suddenly I understood why vacations were so glorified in work culture. Freedom felt like sipping fresh coffee on a beach with no schedule, no deadlines, and no boss waiting to ruin the vibe.
So when I finally quit my job, I hit the road to live the digital nomad lifestyle and squeeze every last drop out of life. Who could ever get tired of being a nomad?
Well… me.
Travel Burnout Is Real

After a while, the nonstop motion wore me down. I craved little things I never thought I’d miss: a circle of friends, my own kitchen, even the luxury of a bed that didn’t change every other night. Suddenly, “home” wasn’t a curse word anymore — it was something my younger, restless self just couldn’t understand.
Here’s the truth I learned: you can burn out on travel.
The first time it hit me, I’d been abroad for 18 months. One morning I woke up and thought, I’m done. I cut my trip short, went home, and years later — in 2013 — I stepped off the merry-go-round of full-time nomadism completely. I’m not alone as there are other Digital Nomads who experience this as well.
But here’s the kicker: I never stayed away for long. Travel has this sneaky way of pulling you back. I’d be home, longing for the road. I’d be on the road, longing for home. It was like living in two worlds at once, always wishing I had a clone.
Why Travel Wears You Down
Your brain loves shortcuts. It’s why you can drive to work half-asleep and somehow not end up in a ditch. Routine saves energy.
But when you’re traveling long-term, you have to relearn life daily: new beds, new languages, new maps, new goodbyes. No shortcuts, just full-throttle problem-solving. It’s exhilarating — but it drains your battery fast.
This is where slow travel comes in. Taking the time to stay longer in one spot — whether it’s Coimbra, Porto, or some hidden gems in Portugal — gives your mind and body a chance to recharge. It’s the difference between sprinting and running a marathon.
Why Home Wears You Down
But let’s be honest: staying home forever can grind you down too. Work, errands, the same commute, the same grocery store — rinse and repeat. Even comfort gets stale.
That’s when you start scrolling Skyscanner at midnight, hunting for cheap flights, or daydreaming about budget-friendly travel tips to get you moving again.
The Cycle of Wander and Return
So we bounce between the two. Travel until the battery runs low. Rest at home until the itch comes back. Rinse and repeat.
When I was younger, I wanted to escape routine forever. Now? I see the beauty in the balance. My years on the road made my bed feel like the softest thing in the universe. My time at home made festivals, train rides, and starry skies all the sweeter.
The truth is simple: you can’t fully appreciate one without the other.
Home makes travel feel like magic. Travel makes home feel like sanctuary. And learning to embrace both — instead of running from one or clinging to the other — is wisdom that only comes with experience.
Atypical Last Thoughts

Being a nomad taught me freedom. Coming home taught me gratitude. Now I move with the rhythm of both, letting each recharge me in its own way.
Because in the end, home and travel aren’t opposites. They’re two sides of the same coin — and the secret to a life well-lived is learning when it’s time to hit the road, and when it’s time to stay put. When you are considering traveling don’t forget travel insurance.
