I am Carter, the traveler behind Atypical Vagabond—and an American living in Portugal who still occasionally misunderstands a café order with remarkable confidence.
After years of traveling, working in technology, and wondering whether “someday” was ever going to arrive, I traded life in the United States for a new chapter in Coimbra. Portugal gradually became more than another destination on the map. It became the place where I could slow down, explore more deliberately, and begin building something that felt like home.
The stories on this site come from firsthand experience: walking the Camino de Santiago with my wife, Sage, getting lost in medieval streets, visiting overlooked Portuguese villages, navigating residency bureaucracy, and learning that the steepest road is usually the one Google Maps recommends.
