Learn Portuguese A1: My Beginner’s Journey into European Portuguese

Olá, fellow adventurer!

Suppose you’ve dreamed of strolling through Lisbon’s cobbled streets, chatting with locals in a cozy café, or ordering pastéis de nata confidently. In that case, you’ve probably realized one thing: it helps to speak Portuguese.

I’m an American traveler who already speaks Spanish—and let me tell you, learning European Portuguese at the A1 level has been a wild and rewarding ride. I created this page to help guide others who are just starting out, especially if you’re like me: eager to connect, curious about culture, and maybe just a little obsessed with proper pronunciation.

Why Learn Portuguese A1?

Learning Portuguese at the A1 level means starting from scratch—but with purpose. This is where you learn:

  • How to introduce yourself and make small talk
  • Essential Portuguese vocabulary for beginners
  • Key grammar structures (yes, verbs are coming for you)
  • Proper pronunciation (hello, nasal vowels!)
  • Everyday expressions you’ll actually use

A1 is the foundation. It’s not just theory—it’s what gets you through the airport, the market, and your first espresso-fueled chat with a native speaker.

Spanish Speakers: The Good News (and Gotchas)

Coming from a Spanish-speaking background, I assumed I’d breeze through Portuguese. Spoiler alert: I didn’t.
Sure, Portuguese and Spanish share a lot—similar grammar, verb roots, and sentence structure. But European Portuguese? It’s like Spanish with a heavy Lisbon accent, eaten by a seagull, and whispered through your nose. And I say that with love.

Some words will feel familiar. Others will trip you up completely. But if you already know Spanish, you’ve got a solid leg up—especially with verb conjugations and gendered nouns.

What You’ll Learn at the A1 Level

Here’s a sneak peek at what we’ll explore together:

  • ✅ Greetings & Introductions
  • ✅ Numbers, days, and telling time
  • ✅ Ordering food, asking for prices, giving directions
  • ✅ Talking about yourself, your family, and your routines
  • ✅ Key Portuguese verbs in the present tense
  • ✅ Navigating shops, cafés, and travel situations
  • Essential pronunciation tips (because it’s not all about what you say—it’s how you say it)

Tools I Use (and Recommend)

  • Memrise & Anki for vocab flashcards
  • Verbos for verbs and conjugation
  • Practice Portuguese (great for European dialect!)
  • YouTube & Portuguese cartoons—yes, I watch toddler shows
  • A small journal for daily phrases and reflections
  • And of course… this blog—to guide you step by step

Atypical Last Thoughts

Learning a language is like unlocking a new way of seeing the world—and hearing it. Portuguese may feel slippery at first (I still mumble “desculpe” on autopilot), but stick with it and you’ll start to understand not just the words, but the rhythm of a new culture. Trust me, it’s worth every confusing verb tense and soft “s”.
