A Coastal Farewell

second day of Caminho Portuguese

As I bid farewell to the coastal village of Labruge, I was greeted by the sight of pristine beaches and the soothing sound of waves. The ocean was my steadfast companion as I walked, its vastness a reminder of the boundless possibilities of this journey.

Leaving the Labruge, I continued my journey northward, although I must admit, I initially veered westward toward the beach. My destination for the day is Vila do Conde. However, we will see where life takes me. There are many places in Portugal with historic charm. Vila do Cond is possibly one of the oldest cities I’ll encounter on this adventure.

Vila do Conde: A Glimpse of History

The town of Vila do Conde, with its historic center and Baroque architecture, offered a fascinating glimpse into Portugal’s past. The ancient aqueduct and the imposing São João Baptista Church were reminders of the enduring heritage of this region.

However, the unpredictability of a pilgrimage like this means I might end up elsewhere, but rest assured, I’m taking you along for the ride.

As I set off, a sudden downpour caught me by surprise, but that won’t stop me from sharing this part of my journey with you. The rain adds its own character to the experience, even if it means I’m walking through a bit of wetness.

Paths Through the Portuguese Countryside

The Camino led me through the lush Portuguese countryside, leaving the coast behind. Fields of green and charming hamlets greeted me along the way. The scent of blooming flowers and birds chirping painted a serene picture of rural life.

Encounters with Fellow Pilgrims

On the second day of Caminho Portuguese, fellow pilgrims are like kindred spirits on a shared odyssey. I met people worldwide, each with stories and reasons for walking. Conversations flowed easily, and the camaraderie of the Camino began to weave its magic.

The Serenity of Rates, Portugal

My day ended in the tranquil village of Rates. The soothing ambiance of the place, with its medieval church and peaceful streets, was the perfect setting for reflection. As the day drew to a close, I couldn’t help but marvel at the simple beauty of life on the Camino.

Lessons Learned

The second day of Caminho Portuguese was a lesson in embracing change and finding peace in the rhythm of the journey. It reinforced the idea that the Camino is a physical trek and a profound inner exploration.

Today, I wanted to talk about something that’s been on my mind: grief. You might wonder, what is grief? Simply put, it’s our emotional response when we experience loss or trauma. It could be the loss of a loved one, a friendship, or even the loss of abilities due to an injury. One of the stages of grief that resonates with me is anger. Anger often acts as a mask, concealing deeper feelings like sadness, depression, or denial. It’s much easier to express anger than to confront those other, more complex emotions.

Anger and the Grieving Process

Growing up in the U.S., it often felt like we didn’t fully respect the feeling of anger or the grieving process. That’s why it’s crucial to find someone you trust who can hold the space for your anger and love you through it, no matter what. It’s not always easy, but it’s essential.

While walking, covering about 20 kilometers, I faced the journey’s natural elements and emotional challenges. It’s been a rainy, demanding walk. My feet are voicing their displeasure, especially after walking through sandy beaches. Despite the challenges, I keep moving northward.

Sometimes, engaging in physical activities helps me process my emotions. At other times, it might exacerbate things. Finding the right balance is crucial. Occasionally, I hyper-focus on certain aspects, which can be helpful and detrimental. So, it’s essential to take a step back when needed.

However, after all this, I was also involved in a purification ceremony. I’m sure this is a spirit greater than myself taking care of me. Where I can’t take care of myself, it is fantastic to feel loved in a place of darkness.

Atypical Last Thoughts

As I laid down to rest after the second day of Caminho Portuguese, I knew the Camino had more revelations. Each step was a reminder that this pilgrimage was about more than reaching the destination; it was about the journey itself, the experiences, the connections, and the transformation that unfolded with every step. The second day on the Caminho Portuguese was just the beginning, and I looked forward to future adventures.

Today was challenging with rain, frustration, and an arduous journey, but I reached this point. I hope you enjoyed this video as much as I enjoyed sharing it with you. I’m committed to sharing my daily experiences along the Camino, so stay tuned for the next installment.

After a shower and a meal, I wanted to recap my experiences today, especially about navigating grief and the powerful emotion of anger. It’s not a comfortable feeling, and people often shy away from it, but it’s an essential part of the healing process. So, if you’re going through any form of grief, take your time, work through your feelings, and allow yourself to experience the full spectrum of emotions.
