Welcome back, fellow travelers, to another exciting day on the Portuguese Camino! As a top travel blogger for Atypical Vagabond, I’m thrilled to take you on this journey through the picturesque landscapes and charming villages of Portugal. Today, we embark on the third day of our pilgrimage, moving from Rates to the enchanting village of Tamel.
Welcome Back Vagabonds!

A strong desire for freedom often arises in a busy world of daily routines and societal pressures. We become fascinated by the exciting appeal of unfamiliar places, the mysterious call of undiscovered destinations, and the life-changing influence of travel. In these instances, we awaken the spirit of the unconventional traveler — the wanderer who desires to explore the world and embark on a journey of self-discovery and personal freedom.
Leaving the Town of Rates

Leaving the San Pedro hostel and stepping out into the bustling morning. The city’s alive with cars, and it’s far from the quiet night I expected. Last night, I thought I’d be out like a light, but that didn’t happen. Instead, I joined a community event and took part in a purification ceremony – a fascinating experience. They focused on processing anger, a unique way to deal with grief.
Today’s looking promising, even with a sprinkle in the forecast. The plan is to head to Tamel, passing through Marcellus. If it turns out to be a bit too much, I’ll make a pit stop there. I’ll capture some beautiful sights for you along the way.
Morning in Rates: A Serene Start
The sun peeks over the horizon as we begin our day in Rates, a peaceful town home to the picturesque São Pedro de Rates Church. As the morning light filters through the ancient cobblestone streets, pilgrims gather their belongings, eager to continue their journey along the Camino.
After a hearty Portuguese breakfast, which might include fresh pastries, strong coffee, and creamy yogurt, we set off towards our next destination, Tamel.
Picturesque Landscapes and Tranquil Pathways

The third day of our Camino takes us through some of the most scenic landscapes Portugal has to offer. As we leave Rates, we find ourselves surrounded by lush green fields, vineyards, and charming farms. The air is filled with the soothing sounds of chirping birds and the fragrance of blooming flowers.
The Camino is well-marked, and yellow arrows guide us through the countryside, making navigation a breeze. The distant ringing of cowbells accompanies our footsteps and leaves rustling in the gentle breeze.
Making a Wrong Turn on the Way
Now, I may have taken a wrong turn off the central route of the Portuguese Camino, but sometimes, you end up where you’re supposed to be. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking here, and I’m just slightly off my intended path. I’ll get back on track with the Camino soon and see where it leads.
So, here I am in Barcelos, Portugal, en route to Tamel. I’m feeling sore, but it’s a good time to talk about gratitude. In challenging times, reflecting on what we’re grateful for is a grounding practice. I’m thankful for the opportunity to embark on this journey, as not everyone is called or willing to do it. It’s tough, but I’m grateful for the emotions I’m experiencing and honoring them.
Honestly, at this point, I’m pretty tired. It’s been an eventful day, the most steps I’ve ever taken in a single day. I wasn’t sure who I’d find at the albergue in Tamel, but it was a group from the last albergue. It’s always exciting to make new friends and share this incredible journey with them. Now, it’s time for some food and rest. If you’ve enjoyed following this adventure, don’t forget to hit the like button and subscribe. I’ll see you in the next video, where I’ll discuss a different stage of grief. Until then!
Encounters Along the Way
One of the unique aspects of the Camino is the people you meet on the path. Today, we come across fellow pilgrims from all corners of the world. Some walk in silence, deep in thought, while others strike up conversations and share their travel stories.
Local villagers, too, greet us with warm smiles and ‘Bom Caminho’ (which means ‘Good Way’ in Portuguese), a heartfelt blessing for pilgrims. They may offer you a freshly picked apple or share some local history.
Tamel: A Quaint Village with a Rich History

As we approach Tamel, our destination for the day, the village appears on the horizon like something out of a fairy tale. The narrow streets are lined with charming, white-washed houses adorned with colorful flowers. The central square is a bustling hub of activity, and the locals are more than happy to welcome weary travelers.
Tamel boasts several historical sites, including the striking Igreja de São Pedro de Fins, a Romanesque church with a beautiful rose window, and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Necessidades. These sites offer a glimpse into the rich history of this tranquil village.

Atypical Last Thoughts

We’ve experienced the beauty of the Portuguese countryside, the warmth of the people, and the charm of a small village like Tamel. As digital nomads, we often seek out unique experiences, and the Camino provides just that – a chance to slow down, reflect, and connect with the land and the people.
Tomorrow, we’ll continue our pilgrimage, going through more stunning landscapes and discovering the heart and soul of this incredible country. So, gear up, my fellow travelers, because the adventure on the Portuguese Camino is far from over! Bom Caminho!
