Yesterday was a fantastic adventure on my pilgrimage. Hello, adventurous souls and fellow travelers! The anticipation is palpable as we leave Portugal behind and step into a new chapter of our Camino experience.

Join me on my journey along the Camino de Santiago and discover the adventure that awaits. I discussed my first day yesterday if you want to know more about it.

A Spirited Start in Rubiães

Camino Portuguese Day 6

Our day begins in the picturesque village of São Sebastião, a serene hamlet nestled amidst the lush landscapes of Northern Portugal. The atmosphere on Camino Portuguese Day 6 here is a unique blend of tranquility and camaraderie, making it an ideal starting point for today’s adventure. After a hearty Portuguese breakfast, it’s time to lace up our hiking boots, grab our trusty walking sticks, and hit the trail!

Today’s a beautiful morning as we set out on what promises to be a challenging day. I started the day thinking I’d lost my wallet, but thankfully, I hadn’t. It’s a relief not to lose something essential for this journey. It’s emotional when you realize you might lack what you need for your adventure. But we’re not letting that hold us back! Today, I’ll be discussing denial while walking through the scenic landscapes.

Walking with Grief – Denial

As I mentioned, grief isn’t a linear process; it’s more like a jigsaw puzzle. Denial is one of its pieces. Sometimes, we deny our feelings, whether it’s anger, sadness, or depression. But it’s okay to deny at times, as long as you eventually acknowledge your emotions. Having good friends to point out when you’re in denial can be incredibly helpful.

Walking through denial can be liberating. And if you don’t have friends, nature can be your companion. Just immerse yourself in the sounds and sights of the natural world. Let it help you reflect and process your feelings.

Today, I walked around 30 miles (50 kilometers) to get closer to Spain. My legs are tired, and it’s been an emotional journey, dealing with grief and denial. Camino Portuguese Day 6 Spirit and Camaraderie

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Camino is the sense of camaraderie that quickly develops among fellow pilgrims. As you embark on the day’s journey, you’ll find yourself surrounded by people from all corners of the world, united by a common purpose – to traverse this ancient path. It’s a beautiful reminder that travel has the power to bridge cultures and connect hearts.

Portugal’s Natural Beauty

As we leave São Sebastião, the verdant landscapes of Northern Portugal unfurl before us. The Camino Portugués takes us through lush vineyards, past quaint villages, and alongside meandering rivers. The air is filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers, and the beauty of this region is enough to take your breath away. Every step feels like a leap into a postcard.

Border Crossing: Hola, España!

Camino Portuguese Day 6

The highlight of the day, of course, is crossing the border into Spain. As you approach the border marker, you’ll likely feel excitement and nostalgia for the days spent in Portugal. The historical significance of this moment is profound, as countless pilgrims have made this journey throughout the centuries.

First Glimpse of Porriño

Our destination for the Camino Portuguese Day 6 is the charming town of Porriño. As we draw closer, the landscape begins to change subtly. The architecture has a Spanish flair, with white-washed buildings and vibrant shutters adorning the streets. Porriño is the gateway to Galicia, a region known for its distinctive culture, culinary delights, and warm-hearted people.

Galician Cuisine: A Delight for the Palate

As the sun sets on our journey, it’s time to indulge in the gastronomic delights of Galicia. You can’t visit this region without trying its famous pulpo a la gallega (octopus with paprika) and empanadas (savory pies). Pair these dishes with a glass of crisp Albariño wine, and you’ll have an authentic taste of Spain.
