One of Lisbon’s most prominent icons is the Centro Cultural de Belém. The structure was built on an incredible site by Manuel Salgado and Vittorio Gregotti. Therefore, its modern architecture distinguishes itself gently from Old Lisbon’s most iconic buildings of old Lisbon.
Why Visit the Centro Cultural de Belém

Referred to as the CCB, this beautifully designed Centro Cultural de Belém was initially built to serve as headquarters for the Portuguese Presidency of the EU in 1992. It now provides over 100,000 square meters of space for a year-round calendar of cultural events, conferences, exhibitions, and meetings.
It also provides one of the best permanent exhibitions of modern art in Europe, several eateries and shops, and much more. If you want to escape the heat and crowds of tourists that flock to Belem, the center has something for everyone and always seems open.
As the name suggests, the center is in Belém, just to the west of the city, and contrasts starkly with the magnificent Jeronimos Monastery, the resting place of Vasco da Gama, which it faces. Although initially considered controversial, building such an enormous modern structure so close to many of Belém’s historic sights, most now agree that the building, designed by architects Vittorio Gregotti and Manuel Salgado, fits in well.
Art lovers will find an impressive collection of contemporary art in the Bernardo Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art housed in the building. Look out for works by Warhol, Picasso, Pollock, Mito, and Duchamp. Even those not particularly interested in modern art will appreciate the opportunity to relax on the bean bags scattered on the grass on the elevated roof terrace, with good views over the river and the Discoveries Monument. Olive trees and a beautiful Henry Moore sculpture add a touch of elegance. Therefore, this is a place where the local literati come to dine.
How to Get to Centro Cultural De Belem?
As you walk from Jerónimos to the CCB, you will cross through centuries of history. There is a reason why CCB is one of the most popular places in Lisbon. Therefore, Lisbonites and tourists enjoy the proximity to cafes, the river, and local gardens. The Belem District possesses some of the best public spaces in the city.
The CCB is a cultural hub with auditoriums, museums, temporary shows, and significant events. Therefore, you should visit the shops, restaurants, cafeterias, and various exhibitions and concerts that make it one of the liveliest venues in Lisbon.
